Navigating as a product owner through a large-scale ecosystem: The corporate and career site relaunch for XING

Relaunching the digital presence for a brand as prominent as XING is a project of immense scope. It was about creating a central ecosystem that brings together different worlds: Brand, HR, Marketing, Product and PR.

As the project lead, I had the privilege of coordinating the build of a new digital home that seamlessly integrates three major pillars:

The Career Hub: An authentic look at internal culture, values, and employee stories.

The Corporate Platform: Providing a clear, modern overview of XING as a product and a brand.

The Newsroom & Press Area: A high-performance section for news and media assets with integrated download features.

1. Success through collaboration and alignment

The true beauty of this project lay in the collaboration across multiple departments. With a large group of stakeholders from PR, HR, Product, Marketing and Brand, my role was to act as the central bridge—ensuring that all teams remained aligned and that every requirement was translated into a cohesive user experience.

This project was a fantastic experience in lateral leadership. It required a high level of communication and strategic coordination to bring the expertise of various specialized teams together. My focus was on creating a structured process that allowed everyone to contribute their best work toward our common goal.

2. My blueprint for managing high stakeholder projects

Managing a relaunch of this size taught me that success isn’t just about the technical go-live; it’s about how you manage the people, the hidden risks, and the corporate requirements. Here are my key takeaways for leading large-scale projects:

Radical Transparency

I established a central project plan that was accessible to everyone at any time. If everyone sees the same timeline, you eliminate “information silos” before they start.

Expect the Unexpected (Bugs & Bottlenecks)

In development, there is no such thing as a “bug-free” launch. Development is often the bottleneck; therefore, I always plan for generous buffers. My rule of thumb: Allocate significant time for extensive testing to ensure the platform is rock-solid before it hits the public.

Proactive Security Integration

Large companies like XING have rigorous security standards. If you treat the Security Team as an afterthought, they can (and will) pull the plug on your project right before launch. My learning: Get them on board as early as possible. Share every detail of the architecture from day one to turn them into partners rather than gatekeepers.

Privacy & Compliance by Design

Data protection isn’t just a legal checkbox—it’s a trust factor. I made sure the Data Protection Officers (DPO) were part of the journey from the beginning. In a GDPR-regulated world, early alignment prevents costly late-stage changes to tracking or data storage.

Balancing Input vs. Scope

It is crucial to listen to every department’s ideas. However, as the lead, I had to keep a laser focus on the project goal. Sometimes that means saying “no” to features that look “nice to have” but don’t serve the core objective.

Decisive Problem Solving

Don’t let small issues snowball. I learned that addressing friction points immediately—rather than postponing them—is the only way to keep a large project on track.

Ownership and Accountability:

Clear responsibilities are the backbone of execution. I focused on empowering team members by giving them clear ownership of their tasks while also holding them accountable for the results.

3. The result: A unified brand experience

My biggest takeaway from the XING relaunch was how critical it is to provide a solid structure that lets talented people shine. By fostering a culture of transparency and shared ownership, we were able to deliver a unified corporate and career presence that represents the full breadth of the XING brand.

Often it’s not just about launching a website; it’s about leading a collective effort to build a digital ecosystem that lasts.
